Common questions
Q/01
How do I get a page in?

Three ways. Drop images or PDFs onto the window, press the + button in the toolbar or choose File > Import (Command-O), or open a file with Silo Scan from the Finder's Open With menu. Every page of a PDF or a multi-page TIFF is read, and all of them arrive in the same review sheet before anything is filed. A long import shows which page it is on, and Stop keeps the pages already read.

Q/02
Can I try it before I have a page to hand?

Yes. Press Try a sample page on the first screen, or choose Help > Try a Sample Page. A made-up receipt, photographed at an angle, goes through detection, straightening, reading and naming in the review sheet. The sample is offered only when nothing else is being reviewed, so it never joins a document of your own.

Q/03
It cropped my page wrong.

Edge detection is a proposal, not a decision. Every imported page opens with four draggable corners over the detected sheet. Move one and the page is straightened and read again. If the page has no clear border against its background, detection finds nothing, the whole image is used, and the review sheet says so rather than guessing.

Q/04
A page is sideways, out of order, or should not be there.

Fix it before you press File Document. Next to the page picker, the arrows move the selected page earlier or later, rotate turns it a quarter-turn clockwise and reads it again, and remove leaves it out. The last page always stays; Cancel drops the whole document.

Q/05
The recognized text is wrong or incomplete.

Recognition follows the pixels. A page photographed at a steep angle, in poor light, or with small print reads worse than a flat, evenly lit one. Recapture rather than fight it: fill the frame with the page, keep shadows off the text, and hold the camera parallel to the paper. If the page is not in English, open Settings: each page is read in the language detected on it by default, and you can turn detection off and pick the languages yourself when it keeps choosing the wrong one, for example on a page that mixes scripts.

Q/06
Is the PDF searchable in other apps?

An exported copy is. Silo Scan writes each page image with an invisible text layer positioned over the words. Export a copy (Command-E) and that text travels with it: Preview and other PDF readers can select and search it, and Spotlight finds it by its words once it sits in one of your folders. The copy in the archive lives inside the app's own container, and you search it from within Silo Scan.

Q/07
Search finds nothing even though I know the word is in a document.

Search runs over the title and the recognized text, so a word that recognition misread is a word the index does not have. Select the document and turn on Recognized text to see what was actually read. Also check the Filter button: a year, kind or issuer filter that is still on hides everything outside it, and Show All Documents clears it.

Q/08
Where are my documents stored, and can I get them out?

Inside the app's own sandbox container, as ordinary PDF files next to a local search index. Settings shows the exact folder. Export writes a copy to any folder you choose. There is no account, sync or server, so the documents are nowhere else. The app does not encrypt them.

Q/09
How does the proposed name work?

Silo Scan looks through the recognized text for a date, a kind of document (receipt, invoice, statement and more) and the issuer printed near the top, and proposes a name from what it found. The name stays editable until you press File Document, and a name you have typed is kept if you re-crop. The kinds and written-out month names it looks for are English. Whatever it found is kept with the document; correct it later with Edit Details.

Q/10
Can I get a deleted document back?

No. Delete asks first, and then removes the PDF and its recognized text from the archive for good; it does not go to the Trash. If you might want a document later, export a copy before you delete it.

Q/11
Does it need the internet?

No, and it cannot use it. The app ships with no networking entitlement, so macOS refuses its outbound and inbound connections outright. There is no account and nothing to download: text recognition is built into macOS. Help > Silo Scan Support and Help > Rate Silo Scan open a web page in another app; Silo Scan itself sends nothing.
